Green Day American Idiot
Viewers of the new Green Day rock opera “American Idiot” were given an extra special treat at the April 22 show at St. James Theatre on Broadway when the band showed up for a surprise set! After the main cast completed their bows, mics were plopped on stage and the band waltzed on. Front man Billie Joe Armstrong would proclaim “This is my first night on Broadway!” before exploding into the plays title track. The band closed the performance with an ode to the days or yore by playing “Basket Case” off of their 1994 breakthrough album.

American Idiot the Musical is a stage adaptation of the award-winning Green Day album. The play, which is a through-sung rock opera, was written by both Billie Joe Armstrong and director of the hit show Spring Awakening Michael Mayer. American Idiot the Musical first premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre before jumping across the country straight to Broadway with Tony award winning actor John Howard Gallagher, Jr. RENT vet Matt Caplan and Avenue Q vet Mary Faber.
The show has garnered a slew of positive reviews including this one from New York Times journalist Charles Isherwood, “In any case the music is thrilling: charged with urgency, rich in memorable melody and propulsive rhythms that sometimes evolve midsong. The orchestrations by Tom Kitt (the composer of “Next to Normal”) move from lean and mean to lush, befitting the tone of each number. Even if you are unfamiliar with Green Day’s music, you are more likely to emerge from this show humming one of the guitar riffs than you are to find a tune from “The Addams Family” tickling your memory.”

Green Day Tickets- Green Day Tour 2010
Classified as a “snot-core” band, redefined as a punk rock band and elevated to one of the most revered rock groups of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Green Day has redefined punk from angst-ridden anarchy to Grammy Award winning, platinum pieces of raw, fierce and provocative material, and, according to Rolling Stone- ” they render teenage wasteland politics with all the more accurate deadpan wit.”

So it’s no surprise that when Green Day tickets go on sale, fans around the world will riot for the chance to buy great Green Day seats. 21st Century Breakdown, released in May 2009, charted at number one in a whooping 17 countries. Receiving a 4.5 out of 5 possible stars, Rolling Stone had this to say about the album- ” They revitalize the whole idea of big-deal rock stars with something to say about the real world. They’re keeping promises they never even made, promises left behind by all the high-minded Nineties bands that fell apart along the way. If it’s a continual surprise that Green Day are the ones to pick up the torch and run with it, that’s part of what makes 21st Century Breakdown so fresh and vital — Green Day sound like they’re as shocked as anyone else.”

American Idiot the Musical?
If you were an avid fan of Green Day’s 2004 release, “American Idiot” you’ll be happy to know that a stage adaptation is in development. That’s right, American Idiot the Musical is scheduled to debut in September at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in Cali, where else?
The musical will contain each track off of the American Idiot CD; the storyline will follow the post 9/11 era and the depressing realities of a shell shocked nation. With the help of “Spring Awakening” director Michael Mayer, the play is slated to hit the stage for it’s debut in September 2009. Of working on “Spring Awakening” Meyer said “It was very much in my head all during that time…sometimes I really would say things like, ‘Why can’t this have a groove like ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’?”
According to Billy Joe, the storyline compliments the CD, but it isn’t linear. Meyer dishes that “If you read it a certain way, you can pull out a multiplicity of voices.” So there you have it, American Idiot tickets are slated to go on sale soon and even though the plot and cast choices are under wraps at this point, expect American Idtio tickets to sell quickly. Keep checking back for more information on the American Idiot saga.
